Eco-Tax is seeking a Director of Tax & Accounting to serve as the firm’s senior operational and technical leader directly under the CEO. This role is designed for an experienced tax and accounting professional who can lead people, grow the firm, educate and develop staff, strengthen client relationships, and translate the CEO’s vision into consistent execution across the tax and accounting functions.
Overview
The Director of Tax & Accounting will act as the CEO’s second-in-command for the tax and accounting organization, with responsibility for day-to-day leadership, team development, client service, technical quality, workflow execution, and growth initiatives. The Director will lead managers and accounting professionals, establish accountability and performance standards, improve processes, and ensure the team consistently delivers accurate, compliant, timely, and advisory-focused service. This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who can lead, grow, and educate while remaining close to clients, staff, and the work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as the senior day-to-day leader of the tax and accounting organization and act as the CEO’s #2 for firm execution
Lead, coach, educate, and hold Tax Managers, Senior Tax Accountants, Tax Accountants, and accounting staff accountable for performance and development
Oversee tax and accounting operations, client engagements, workflows, deadlines, quality standards, and resource allocation
Drive firm growth by strengthening client relationships, expanding advisory services, improving retention, and identifying new revenue opportunities
Provide technical leadership and final-level guidance on complex tax, accounting, compliance, notice, and client matters
Partner directly with the CEO to execute firm strategy, improve profitability, develop leaders, and scale operations
About You:
Lead the daily operations of the tax and accounting functions, ensuring clear priorities, ownership, accountability, and consistent execution across teams
Oversee a portfolio of client engagements and major client relationships, ensuring timely, accurate, compliant, and high-quality delivery of tax and accounting services
Review and approve complex tax returns, technical positions, accounting matters, and high-risk or non-standard engagements; provide clear direction on resolution
Direct workflow, capacity planning, staffing, and deadline management; proactively identify bottlenecks and reallocate resources to meet client and firm commitments
Develop Tax Managers and senior team members into stronger leaders through coaching, feedback, training, delegation, and performance management
Build and deliver ongoing technical, client-service, advisory, and leadership education to strengthen staff capability and reduce rework
Establish and enforce standards for workpapers, documentation, review quality, client communication, file management, and overall professional execution
Lead client escalations and high-value client conversations; manage expectations, resolve service issues, and protect long-term client relationships
Drive tax planning and advisory services by identifying opportunities, setting expectations for proactive advice, and ensuring recommendations are implemented and followed through
Identify opportunities to grow revenue through expanded services, partner products, cross-functional referrals, consultations, and deeper client relationships
Partner with the CEO on firm growth strategy, profitability, staffing plans, organizational structure, performance expectations, and operational priorities
Track and analyze production, WIP, turnaround time, quality, client retention, referral activity, revenue opportunities, and team performance; implement corrective actions when needed
Coordinate Tax, Accounting, and Payroll teams to ensure client information, financial reporting, tax strategies, and deadlines remain aligned
Drive process improvement, standardization, automation, and effective use of systems including QuickBooks Online, Payroll Relief, tax preparation platforms, and related firm technology
Lead “all hands on deck” execution during peak deadlines, establishing priorities, communicating expectations, and ensuring resources are deployed where needed most
Represent the CEO and firm leadership in internal meetings and operational decisions as delegated; ensure decisions are communicated and carried through across the organization
About You:
8–12+ years of progressive experience in tax, public accounting, accounting leadership, at a CPA Firm, including significant people-management responsibility
Demonstrated experience leading tax and/or accounting teams, managers, client portfolios, and deadline-driven operations
Strong technical tax and accounting knowledge with the judgment to evaluate complex issues, manage risk, and provide clear recommendations
Proven ability to lead, coach, educate, and develop professionals at multiple levels while setting clear performance expectations
Business-minded leader with demonstrated ability to improve client retention, identify growth opportunities, and contribute to revenue and profitability
Executive presence and sound judgment with the ability to operate as a trusted second-in-command to the CEO
Excellent client-facing, communication, and conflict-resolution skills, including the ability to manage escalations and difficult conversations
Strong operational and workflow-management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities, capacity, deadlines, and accountability across teams
Advanced experience with QuickBooks Online and familiarity with tax preparation, payroll, workflow, and practice-management systems
Energetic, accountable, solutions-oriented, and team-focused leader who is comfortable working onsite five days per week and leading from the front
Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field required
Active CPA (Certified Public Accountant) license required
Required:

Must be able to lift, push or pull 25 lbs
Office environment, will be sitting for prolonged periods at a time of 8 hours or more
